LIE: If I don’t feel tempted and know that I will be good, I don’t need other people’s accountabilty.
Truth: Never trust yourself! You are your own worst enemy and can sneak up on yourself to the point where you are suddenly sinning and wondering how that happened. Instead get support and accountability in order to be able to trust what God is doing in your life.
We are to avoid even the appearance of evil. 1 Thessalonians 5:22
Let him that thinks that he stands solidly, watch out, or he is likely to fall. 1 Corinthians 10:12
We are to assemble with brethren in order to consider one another and provoke one another to love and good works. Hebrews 10:24
I have known so many counselors and pastors who fell into sexual sin because of their success and because they believed that it would never happen to them.
And, let’s say that they do not fall into lust but allow situations such as counseling a young lady with no one else nearby. I have known several cases where the work of God was ruined by accusations that were probably not true, but the pastor could not prove it because of the lack of accountability.
We are to give no offence in anything, that the ministry be not blamed. 2 Corintians 6:3
We are to provide for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men. 2 Corinthians 8:20,21 Romans 12:17
We are to so live before the sight of men that they can find nothing to criticize, but instead glorify God. Matthew 5:16
We are to flee youthful lusts 2 Timothy 2:22
It is standard, even among the unsaved, counselors to have windows in the doors of counseling rooms.
It used to be standard to never have a man and woman that are not married to each other drive anywhere unsupervised.
Remember, pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18
There is a reason that all of the commands in the New Testament are in the plural form. “You and your support group stand strong.” If you get attacked, two shall withstand, and a threefold cord is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:12
When someone commits adultery, they say they are sorry and promise to be good; they always fall. If they said, in order not to fall, I am getting accountability and fleeing temptation and triggers. Then you could take a risk on God working in them and others fighting alongside them.
Jesus always sent his disciples out two by two for friendship, encouragement and accountabilty.
Accountability does not mean that the other has no problems. In fact, they will probably ask you to hold them accountable as well. Nor is it their job to catch you and make you be good. They simply need to check, and you need to be honest.
So ask God to give you accountability partners for Bible meditation, anger management, a controlling dominating spirit, health habits, lust, etc.
We are to confess our faults one to another, not deny that we have any issues or weakness.
Also build into your environment and schedule elements that make slipping harder and decrease temptation.
