Recently I’ve run into people who are listening to the devil’s lie that we will sit around on clouds playing harps for all eternity. They are rightly pained at the thought of having to tolerate eternal boredom.
Be assured that the afterlife for believers will be full of creativity, wonder, relationships, ruling and reigning, etc.
Even this world would be awesome forever if sin and death were removed. You could travel around the world making friends and sampling local food and culture, then settle down in your preferred place and then travel again to reexperience or discover new culture and creativity.
One of the problems is that the modern world trains us to only be happy when things are “New and Different.” Things have to be noisy and flashy. We have developed attention spans of less than 2 seconds. Where is the chance to be still and know God? Be still and savor the wonder. So we won’t be so easily bored in our perfected attitudes.
Paul says that the sufferings of this life are not even worthy to be compared with the glory of the future. Romans 8:18: The Bible says that we will reign forever and ever. Revelation 2:5 (For starters.) We shall be priests of God and Christ and shall reign with him. Revelation 20:6: There will be no pain or sorrow or death, and all things will be new. Revelation 21:4
We will be like him for we will see him. 1 John 3:2 God started in the beginning by creating and interacting with his creation. It is in his nature and in ours to create, invent, and build.
There is a crystal-clear river flowing from God’s throne with a road on each side and a tree of life with different fruit and healing leaves. Revelation 22:2
There will be cities to rule and things to do to serve God. Luke 19:17; Revelation 5:10
Yes, we will sing to God, but it will be new songs. Someone will have to write them. Revelation 5:9
Then there is participating in the Joy of Jesus. Who, for the joy of having a relationship with you, endured the cross, despised the shame. If we bring him that much joy, don’t you think that he will bring us that much joy? Hebrews 12:2
So don’t listen to the devil’s lie. He is always half true and all wrong. We should revel in the adventures of this life, knowing that the adventures to come will be so much more thrilling that they will be incomparable. Romans 8:18
