How to guard what is important when it seems to be “Just There”

I still work at the VA for a few more weeks, and they have me manage a card called a PIV card. It is an innocent looking card that gets me in the gate and in the building and is mandatory to operate the computer. When it is in my possession, it seems like no big deal. However, when I lost it, they brought in the police and made a, “Federal Case” about it.

It struck me that so many of life’s most important things seem like “no big deal” when they are in front of us. Then we lose them, and we wish that we had guarded, validated, and contributed to them when we could.

Being old (almost 77!) I have seen children come and go out of my home, grandchildren come and are now growing old enough to be gone about their lives. Friends move and seem to disappear. Careers come to an end. Opportunities to build the kingdom are fleeting.

I remember the phrase, “Only what is done for and by Christ will last!”

It is important to not wallow in the past and in what was and is no more, or in how we might have done it differently. Instead, I ask God to help me seize the day and see his intent in it and grab hold of that by his grace.

Now is the accepted time, now is the day of salvation. Learn to value the people and opportunities now and may God find us laboring at full tilt when He returns or when we go to see him face to face. 2 Corinthians 6:2/ Luke 12:4,43

How right you are! The mundane isn’t so ordinary when you can’t put your hands on it anymore. How many times have we misplaced our keys? Or, heaven forbid, our cell phone?! Horrors!!

I have to remember to take this life one day at a time; we are not promised a tomorrow. Make the most of your relationships, especially with your family. Be sure to love your neighbor, and pray for those who hurt you. Make a positive difference in someone’s life, because you may be the only Jesus they have seen. Waking up in the morning IS a big deal.
