We often portray Jesus in song and sermons as carrying our sins on his back. The scriptures say, “God the father MADE Jesus sin, who knew no sin, that I might be made the righteousness of God in him. 2 Corinthians 5:21 Christ has redeemed me from the curse of the law, being made a curse for me! Galatians 3:13
Oh the enormity of the cost of my salvation. The Father gave up his son for me and the Son became sin for me! How shall they not, freely, give me all that I need to be freed from the curse and be made the righteousness of God himself. Romans 8:32
In order to find the motivation for faith obediences, I need to see two things: 1. That I am truly the chief of sinners and 2. The enormity of the price paid for me.
I remember a young lady who said that she loved Jesus but hated the Father for letting all that happen to his son. She had been neglected and abused by her father, so her attitude was understandable. However, as a loving father, I can assure you that God the father felt even more pain than Jesus did. Watching your son go through suffering is harder than grabbing the suffering and walking it.
When Jesus was in the garden and prayed, “Father, if there be any way this cup pass from me, nevertheless your will not mine be done.” Matthew 26:39 I do not believe that it was the pain, the loneliness, the public shame that he was burdened about. I believe it was becoming sin for me. He knew that would result in the Father looking away. They had never been apart in all eternity and now it had to happen or I would be lost forever. The enormity of the price he paid for me, is captured in the most precious sentence in the Bible. “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani. My God, My God why have you abandoned me?” Mark 15:33,34
The woman with the issue of blood, foresaw what would happen next. In all of history, when dirty touched clean, the clean became dirty and the dirty stayed dirty. But, when she, being defiled, touched Jesus, his infinite purity cleansed her defilement and healed her and he stayed pure. On the cross, Jesus became the sin of all mankind and overcame it, paid for the sin and he stayed infinitely pure!!!
“Lord, I will never grasp the infinite debt I owe you. Help me to worship and obey, for I owe you all my thoughts, words and deeds. Help me to live in the deep logic of total surrender!
One reply on “JESUS WAS SIN!”
God is scary.
Jesus is comforting.
