Did you ever notice at the rock concert how everyone fights to sit at the back and leave all the front seats empty? Or was that at the ball game? Come to think of it, it was at church wasn’t it?
When we were homeschooling, I noticed the children constantly asking, (if not in these exact words) “Just how much of this learning do I have to put up with in order to have a great job or at least be able to quit for the day? Have i put up with enough meat and potatoes to be allowed to switch to the desert?
Do I do the same with the Lord? Read his word out of duty, “there I’ve put up with that enough for the day.” “Go to church twice on Sunday and Wednesday also?
Where is the passion to go early and often and grab the front row and the opportunities to serve? “I was glad when they said unto me, let us go unto the house of the Lord.” Or Philippians 1:9 And this I pray that my love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment. 2 Thessalonians 1:3 may my faith grow exceedingly, and let my love for the brethren abound. In 1 Thessalonians 4:1,10 Paul beseeches me that I should walk more and more in the teachings of the Word and in pleasing God and in my love for the brethren increase more and more. 1 Thessalonians 3:12 May the Lord make me to increase and abound in love toward all men. 2 Corinthians 8:7 along with abounding in faith and truth talking and knowledge of God’s word and in diligence and in love for the brethren, also abound in giving resources to help others.
It is enough to think through how I would live and act if I truly hungered and thirsted after God; then ACT IN THE FACT of who I am, then the passion will follow the investment. I need to remember that doing the right thing is still obedience even if it doesn’t bubble out of me. Where my treasure is my heart will follow. Matthew 6:21
“Lord may your word and life with you be to me a treasure. Make me like the man who, finding a treasure in a field, for joy thereof it ,went and sold all that he had and bought the field, or finding a pearl of great price, went and sold all the he had and bought it.
