In Philippians, we read, “be careful for nothing” which does not mean to be sloppy and careless but rather to not be anxious.
Remember the basic Bible principle that it never suggests that I just cut it out in my own strength. First I am weak and can do nothing without the help of the Holy Spirit. Next, even if I were to cut it out, I would create a vacuum that would suck in problems 8 times worse. When it says DO it is because I don’t and it wants me to push it out by doing the opposite. When it says DON’T it is because I do and it wants me to stop by doing the opposite. So Philippians says when I find myself anxious: thank God for the problem and for what he is going to do, ask for our needs to be met, focus on all the positives, do the little you can focusing on the needs of others in the situation.
So when I am afraid, I will remind myself of the following truths. I will do the following obedient steps in the grace and power of the Holy Spirit.
1.God is my shield and my exceeding great reward. Genesis 15:1
2.God listens to my prayers Genesis 20:11
3.God is always with me and will never leave of forsake me Genesis 26:24
4. In the most unlikely places and events, God has a plan to give me a hope and a future. Genesis 46:3
5. My job is to stand still, be still, in quietness and confidence, and watch God work so that my faith might be built and his glory made known. Exodus 14:13
6.My trials serve to help me prioritize God and hate sin. Exodus 20:20
7. I need to face my problems with strength, God’s, and courage. Joshua 10:25
8. When afraid, I need to do the little I can with the little that I have. I Kings 17 :13
9. If God be for me what can man do against me? Psalm 118:6
10. I do not need to fear that evil people will get away with their evil. I need to beg God’s mercy on them, for vengeance it his and not mine. Isaiah 35:4
11. Remember that he has redeemed me and called me by a new name and I belong to him and he always takes care of his own. Isaiah 43:1
12. I need not heed the reproach of men when my righteousness is of God. Isaiah 51:7
13. I need to focus on drawing nearer to God, so that I can hear his loving, “fear not”. Lamentations 3:57
14. Remember that I am greatly beloved of God. Daniel 10:18
15. The Spirit of God is in me to comfort and help me to let go of my fear. Haggai 2:5
16. All that man can do is kill my body, “So what” God gets the last, eternal word.Matthew 10:28
17. How little do I think that God values me? He cares for sparrows, certainly he cares for me for I am far more valued than a sparrow for the father gave his own son for me and how will he not, with him, freely give me all. Matthew 10:31
18. Lastly I am told to fear not because Jesus is the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last , the beginning and the end. He is also the Beta, Delta Gamma etc. and everything in between. He is for me so who, or what, or when, or where, or how, or why can ever succeed against me?
As the old hymn says, “Fear thou not for I am with thee, I will still thy solace be. Never mind the tossing billows, take my hand and follow follow me! Where he leads me I will follow, I’ll go with him, with him all the way!”
